How to Calculate Wallpaper Rolls
Buying the right amount of wallpaper prevents the costly problem of running out mid-project with a discontinued or batch-mismatched product. This calculator accounts for pattern repeat waste — the most common reason people underestimate wallpaper quantities.
Measuring Your Room
Measure the perimeter of the room (all wall lengths added together). For a rectangular 12×12 room: perimeter = 2 × (12+12) = 48 ft. Multiply by wall height to get total wall area: 48 × 8 = 384 sq ft. Subtract doors (about 20 sq ft each) and windows (about 15 sq ft each) for the net paintable area.
Pattern Repeat Waste
A pattern repeat is the vertical distance after which the pattern starts over. To match patterns at seams, each strip must be cut longer than needed, creating waste. The larger the repeat, the more waste. A wallpaper with a 24-inch repeat could waste nearly 24 inches per strip — roughly 30–35% extra material. No-match or random-match wallpapers have zero additional waste.
Roll Sizes — US vs. European
Wallpaper is priced in single rolls but usually sold in double rolls. A US standard double roll covers about 56 usable sq ft (72 gross). European rolls are smaller — about 28–30 sq ft per single roll or 48 sq ft per double. Always check the roll dimensions and calculate from usable sq ft, not gross area.
Professional Tips
Buy all rolls from the same batch (dye lot) — colors vary slightly between batches. Store extra rolls in a cool, dry place for future touch-ups. When in doubt, buy one extra roll. Ask the retailer about their return policy for unopened rolls — many stores accept returns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Perimeter = 48 ft × 8-ft ceiling = 384 sq ft. Subtract 1 door (20 sq ft) + 2 windows (30 sq ft) = 334 sq ft. Add 20% pattern waste = 401 sq ft. At 56 sq ft per US double roll: 7 rolls minimum. Buy 8 for safety.
Wallpaper is priced per single roll but sold in double rolls. A US double roll covers ~56 usable sq ft. Always buy in double rolls since you need full-height strips from each roll — a single roll can't typically yield a full-height strip without multiple awkward pieces.
Always add at least one extra roll beyond your calculated need. With patterns, already built-in waste allowance in the calculation covers most scenarios. The extra roll is your insurance against a discontinued print or installation damage.
Ceiling wallpaper runs perpendicular to the longest wall. Measure ceiling length as your perimeter and ceiling width as your height in the calculator. Wallpaper paste specifically rated for ceilings (or a border adhesive) provides better hold on overhead surfaces.
Yes — apply a wallpaper primer or sizing before hanging. Primer seals porous surfaces, prevents uneven paste absorption, and makes future removal much easier. On bare drywall, primer is especially important as unprepared drywall paper can tear when wallpaper is removed.
