How to Calculate Plywood Sheets for Any Project
The plywood calculator handles the sheet count math in seconds. You provide the total area, sheet size, and waste factor — it gives you the exact number of sheets to buy and total cost. Here is what you need to know to get accurate inputs.
The Basic Formula
Sheets = total area ÷ sheet area × waste factor, rounded up. For a 400 sq ft subfloor using 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) with 10% waste: 400 × 1.10 = 440 sq ft ÷ 32 = 13.75 → buy 14 sheets. Always round up — a partial sheet still costs the same as a full one from most suppliers.
Plywood Thickness Guide
1/4" (6mm): Cabinet backs, drawer bottoms, decorative paneling. Cannot span gaps. 3/8" (9mm): Light wall paneling, some cabinet sides. 1/2" (12mm): Cabinet sides and shelving, wall sheathing, roof decking on close rafters. 5/8" (15mm): Floor sheathing on 16" joist spacing, heavier shelving. 3/4" (19mm): Subflooring, workbench tops, structural shelving, door cores. 1-1/8" (T&G panels): Subflooring on 24" joist spacing in one layer.
Plywood Grades
Plywood is graded by face and back quality. Common grades: CDX: C face (some knots), D back, X (exterior glue). Standard construction sheathing for walls, roofs, subflooring. BCX: Better face, good for one-side-visible applications like garage shelving. ACX: Smooth sanded face, used where the surface will be seen or painted. BB or higher: Furniture-grade, sanded both sides. Marine: Void-free core with waterproof glue, for boat building and outdoor furniture.
Waste Factor by Layout
8% waste works for simple rectangular rooms where sheets align with walls. 10% is appropriate for most standard projects. Increase to 15% if the room has many corners, closets, or built-ins requiring odd cuts. Diagonal subfloor or wall paneling (45° orientation) wastes 20–25% because every sheet has triangular offcuts that cannot be reused on the same row.
Subflooring Tips
Use tongue-and-groove (T&G) plywood for subflooring — the interlocking edge reduces squeaking and bouncing between sheets. Stagger seams so no four corners meet at one point. Leave a 1/8" gap between sheets for expansion. Apply construction adhesive to every joist before nailing or screwing for a squeak-free floor. Use 8d ring-shank nails or 2" coarse-thread screws spaced every 6" at edges and 12" in the field.
Roofing Deck Notes
Roof decking uses CDX plywood (1/2" for up to 16" rafter spacing, 5/8" for 24" spacing). Install with face grain perpendicular to rafters. Stagger end joints between rows. Leave 1/8" gap at edges and 1/16" at ends. APA-rated OSB is acceptable and commonly used for roof decking but requires more care around moisture.

4×8 feet (32 sq ft) is the standard. Other sizes include 4×9, 4×10, and Baltic birch 5×5. The 4×8 sheet is by far the most available and affordable option.
1/4" for cabinet backs and decorative paneling, 1/2" for wall sheathing and shelving, 3/4" for subflooring and structural applications. Check your span tables for floor and roof applications.
Plywood is stronger, holds fasteners better, and handles moisture better. OSB is 15–30% cheaper. Both work for wall and roof sheathing. Use plywood where moisture exposure or fastener strength is a concern.
Area ÷ 32 × 1.10 (waste), rounded up. A 20×15 room (300 sq ft): 300 ÷ 32 × 1.10 = 10.3 → buy 11 sheets of 3/4" T&G plywood.
CDX 3/4" runs $35–$55. ACX (smooth face) $55–$75. Baltic birch furniture grade $60–$120. OSB 7/16" runs $18–$30. Prices fluctuate with lumber markets — check locally before estimating.
