Understanding Running Pace

Running pace is the time required to cover one unit of distance (mile or kilometer). Pace and speed are reciprocals: speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mile). Pace is the preferred measure for runners because it directly translates to how your body feels and what effort level you're sustaining.

The Mile/Kilometer Conversion

One mile = 1.60934 kilometers. To convert min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.60934. A common shorthand: min/km ≈ min/mile × 0.621. For quick mental math: an 8:00 min/mile pace is roughly 5:00 min/km (the actual value is 4:58).

Training Zones by Pace

Easy/recovery runs: 60–75% max HR, about 90+ seconds slower than race pace. Tempo runs: 80–90% max HR, "comfortably hard" — can speak a few words. Interval training: 90–100% max HR, race pace or faster. Most training should be easy — the 80/20 rule: 80% easy, 20% hard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile to get mph. A 10:00/mile pace = 60 ÷ 10 = 6.0 mph. A 8:00/mile = 7.5 mph. To convert min/km to km/h: divide 60 by your pace in minutes per km. This converter handles these calculations automatically.

1 mile = 1.609 km, so the same speed in min/km is always a lower number than in min/mile. A 10:00/mile pace = 6:13/km. Most running apps show both — use min/mile if you think in miles, min/km if you're used to metric. Race results in most countries outside the US are reported in km.

A 7:00/mile pace equals 4:21/km or 8.57 mph. Translated to race times: approximately 21:44 for a 5K, 43:28 for a 10K, and 1:31:39 for a half marathon. It is a solid recreational running pace — roughly what a fit runner maintains in a 10K race.

For most beginner runners, a comfortable conversational pace is typically 11–14 minutes per mile (7:00–9:00 per km). The most important guideline for beginners is the "talk test" — you should be able to speak in short sentences without gasping. Starting too fast is the most common beginner mistake and leads to early fatigue, discouragement, and injury.

Tempo pace is typically 25–40 seconds per mile slower than your current 5K race pace, or the fastest pace you can sustain for 20–40 minutes. It corresponds to roughly 80–90% of maximum heart rate — "comfortably hard." For example, a runner with a 25:00 5K pace (8:03/mile) has a tempo pace of approximately 8:28–8:43/mile.

Sustainable pace slows significantly as race distance increases. As a rough guide, half marathon pace is about 10–20 seconds per mile slower than 10K pace, and marathon pace is 45–60 seconds per mile slower than 10K pace. These differences reflect the aerobic demands and glycogen limitations at different distances. Use a race predictor calculator to estimate specific times.
